Digital Marketing Your Hair Salon

Digital Marketing Your Hair Salon

I decided to write a blog post with thoughts about digital marketing your hair salon. These are observations I’ve noticed, not with just hair salons, but with most small businesses. As they try to figure out the murky waters of social media and digital marketing, it’s been interesting seeing how all hair salons and stylists are using the same strategies. This is surprising since it’s a creative industry, yet there are very few with a solid beauty salon marketing plan

Social Media vs. websites, which one is better? I often hear small business owners telling me how social media is “where it’s at.” For this blog post, I will use an example of a business to consumer, focusing on hair salons.

I was chatting with someone who manages a hair salon, and she said just that, “Instagram is where it’s at”.

Since I follow many salons on Instagram, I understand why Instagram for the hair salon industry is not where it’s at, but necessary when properly used. Hopefully, you can replace the hair salon with your type of business. Hopefully, it still makes sense. It should, after all, business is business.

Let’s Be Clear When Digital Marketing Your Hair Salon

Let’s be clear, just because this blog post touches on Social Media vs. websites does not mean you should choose only one. You should do both, but do both properly. Most people in the hair salon industry are using Instagram wrong, and most of their websites are abysmal and static.

The Psychological Difference

Social Media, mostly the platforms that are hashtag friendly, will result in instant gratification. You will get many likes with the right or wrong hashtags. Dopamine will be released into your brain, and as a result, you will feel like you are on the right track.

With blogging, like I’m doing now, it’s the long game. There isn’t any evidence that I can give you that anybody will ever read this blog post. But here I am, writing away.

However, there have been landing pages and blog posts that are many years old that I’m still making money from. However, it’s a small percentage, but it’s well worth it.

Who is Liking Your Posts

You have to realize which I have by looking at your posts; who is liking them? The answer typically is that people who are in the same industry as you are in are liking them. As a result, these are not potential clients; they are mostly other hair salons and stylists. The reason for this is primarily because of the hashtags that are being used. A potential or current client most likely aren’t following hashtags such as #njhairsylist; however, other hair professionals are, and so are businesses, like mine, who want to connect with you to hire Five Star SEO.

What Hashtags Should I Use?

What hashtags you should use is a big part of digital marketing for your hair salon. I won’t go into specifics because you should test all of this yourself. However, I will say, think about where your potential clients hang out, what they like, where they live, develop a buyer persona for them, and create your hashtags around their behaviors.

Google is King

Furthermore, Google is the most widely searched website. Yet hair salon owners spend little or no time at all on their website. Not many people are searching for hair salons on Instagram. If you were searching for a service, where would you go? Instagram, or Google? If you are like 90 percent of people, you will go right to Google. Since most people want to feel relevant, they’ll post on social media to get their dopamine release. Unfortunately, this dopamine release doesn’t result in revenue. Digital marketing for your hair salon should have a lot of emphasis on your website and blog posts. I understand that it’s a lonely feeling, wondering if anyone will ever read it, but there is not another way to show up organically on search engines such as Google. Just write what you love about, hopefully, that’s about hair.
